When should you get an orthopedic second opinion?
Five minutes of reading that can spare you an unnecessary surgery — or confirm, with confidence, that it is the right one.
Why ask for a second opinion?
Orthopedic surgery is a major decision, and confirming the diagnosis and plan beforehand is common practice — even recommended. A second opinion is not distrust: it is a check that good physicians respect, and sometimes it turns a surgical plan into a more conservative treatment that solves the problem.
Signs it is worth it
Surgery was recommended without enough conservative treatment. Physical therapy, medication and activity changes resolve many cases; if they were not genuinely tried, they deserve a review. You received conflicting diagnoses from different physicians or imaging reads. You are still in pain after a treatment that should have worked. Or you simply want to be sure before a major procedure — a completely valid reason.
What to bring to your consultation
Gather your X-rays and MRIs (images and reports), a list of your medications, notes from previous consultations and, if the area was operated before, the surgical report. That makes the review far more useful. If you do not have everything at hand, bring what you have — the rest can be requested.
What you get from a second opinion with us
A review of your case with time and clarity: we explain what we see in your imaging, lay out every option — including the ones that do not involve surgery — and tell you what we would do if you were our own family. If the recommendation is not to operate, we will say so. And if surgery truly is the best path, we explain why, in detail.
